Part of the Southwest Fire Science Consortium and AZ Wildfire Initiative‘s SW Fire Stories wildfire documentary video series, this video raises awareness about wildfire on the Lower Gila River and surrounding communities and the work being done by the Lower Gila River Collaborative to reduce wildfire risk and to inform people about the habitat and importance of restoration on the Lower Gila River.
The Lower Gila River Collaborative has a vision of protecting neighborhoods and critical infrastructure from fire and bringing beauty back to a thriving Lower Gila River. By working together, the Lower Gila Collaborative is reducing the risk of costly fire that threatens neighborhoods and public infrastructure like power lines & bridges. This is a large undertaking that requires sustained effort from many partners, but the benefits are broad and include people safely enjoying and playing in the river corridor, animals and native plants thriving, reduced impacts from flood and reduced fire risk. The work is bringing climate-smart resilience to a threatened waterway, and as such, is a playground for scientific research and knowledge exchange.
