Fire has always been an integral ecosystem component in Southwestern forests. However, fire recurrence cycles have been disrupted due to national fire suppression efforts over the past 100 years. Overcrowded forests have created conditions ripe for severe wildfire. This is the story of the Santa Clara Creek Watershed, a 23-mile stream that flows from the Jemez Mountains in northern New Mexico. It serves as the primary water source, cultural identity, and spiritual sanctuary to the Pueblo of Santa Clara.
These short videos were taken from our Southwest Fire Story Documentary on the Restoration of Santa Clara Canyon, to be released here in November 2024.
