Place Based Curriculum
A place-based and experiential middle school science curriculum designed to help students understand the biotic communities of the Southwest, how these communities are or are not adapted to wildland fire, and how the land can be thoughtfully managed. The lessons are aligned with state standards and follow the 5E model of science education.

PLACE BASED
"I would definitely recommend
this curriculum. It is based here
(in the Southwest), not some
place the kids haven't seen before."

BREADTH
"It (FELL) doesn't just focus
on one part of wildfires, but
on everything. Fires are not just
one thing, (they are complex)."

LEARNING TO SEE
"FELL is a cool, hands on
way to teach students to
experience and learn from trees
and the forest."
